Camelot 3.x - Network Backup

In Camelot 3, client computers are connecting to the database on the server computer through the IP address of the server.  Then on that server computer, there is a database server program that runs there, which uses an alias entry that points directly to the database file in use.

Since this is the case, there is no direct windows file path that is needed to the database file itself from the client machines, that is, UNLESS you are wanting to initiate a backup of your database from a client machine instead of the server.

Please keep in mind that we recommend you use a 3rd party backup solution to make sure you have good, regular backups of your main database file.  Online solutions are good, like http://www.carbonite.com, and then it is also good for you to just have an in-house scheme to make sure you have good copies of your main database file (usually the C:\Program Files\Camelot3\Database\CAMDB.FDB file) being created regularly.  Again, a separate backup program is recommended that just copies your database file on your server to whatever external drive.

If, however, you want to use the auto-backup in Camelot3 that is designed to just backup onto the hard drive on the server, then for that to work from a client machine, it has to have a direct path to the database file on the server.  So you need a mapped drive letter on the client that points to the drive on the server where the database resides.  If you do not know how to map a network drive, then please refer to your windows help for that.

Once you have the mapped drive letter, then:

1. on the client machine, go to windows start > My Computer (or Computer)

2. double-click on the (C:) drive, then Program Files (or for 64-bit, Program Files (x86), then Camelot3

3. look for the Camelot.ini file (configuration settings file type), and double-click on it to open it - if it doesn't know what program to use, select program from list, and select Notepad)

4. Add an entry in the file as follows:

FullDBPath=F:\Program Files\Camelot3\Database\CAMDB.FDB

where F: is the mapped network drive and the rest of that path is the direct folder path on the server to your actual database file.

Then within the Camelot3 program, on the Misc/Setup > Company/Misc Info screen > Backup tab, you should leave the path for auto-backup entry blank - that way it will use the default path for that, which is the Backup folder under the Camelot3 program folder on the server.  If you are wanting to backup to some other path there, then again, you have to come up with a mapped drive letter path that points to that location, and the same exact path has to be valid for every client/workstation.
