You can make the order/invoice number field editable on your form layout so you can then type whatever number you'd like to be the invoice number. This is done in the form layout designer.
Follow these steps to make the order number field editable on each order you enter:
1. Open a new order (press [Ctrl]+[N] on your keyboard)
2. Press F5 at the top of your keyboard to go into the form designer for that order form layout.
3. You will see the [WO#] field, usually at the upper right part of the order form layout; double-click on that field to access the Field Properties screen for it.
4. Go to the Behavior tab on the field properties screen, and be sure the "Is this field editable" box is checked, and the "Tab Stop" box is checked, and click OK.
5. From the Form pull-down menu at the top, choose Save, and then close the form designer.
Now the order number field can be clicked into and you can type whatever number you'd like for the order. It is important that the number be unique, but if you make that field editable, it is up to you to make sure that it is unique. The program will not perform any checks for you to ensure that.
Usually the reason you may choose to make that number editable is so that you can match some preprinted forms that have numbers on them already.
